Troubleshooting this TutorialSometimes, even though you try hard to understand the information in a tutorial, things don't work out quite like you want it to. This page is here to help you resolve any problems you might be having with the tutorial on using XACT. The Common Mistakes section describes common problems that people have when doing the things in this tutorial, and how to resolve them. The Frequently Asked Questions section describes questions that people have that aren't related to mistakes, but rather, trying to understand the stuff better or exploring how it can be used. If your problem or concern isn't addressed here, feel free to add a comment below, so that I know where you're having trouble. I like to keep these pages fairly clean, so I may remove comments that I felt like have been addressed. If I remove your comment and you don't feel like the problem has been fixed, repost the question and we'll take another look at it. If a tutorial has a mistake in it, I will fix the mistake and reply to the comment with a brief explanation. However, after a couple of weeks I'll likely go back and remove the original comment as well as my reply, because, hopefully, the problem will have been fixed, and it won't be a concern any more. |

I am trying to play a sound file to see what it sounds like. There is a context menu item to play the sound, but every time I get the same error:
There is a menu item Audition -> Connect to localhost (local), but I get the same error.
I will try to find a solution and post here again if I find one.
Cannot connect because the server was not running.
If anyone has the same problem, you need to run the
XACT Auditioning Utility,
which is installed into the same folder as
Microsoft Cross-Platform Audio Creation Tool (XACT)
The reason there is a server that must be run, I don't know. It seems that the server can be running on another system (perhaps an Xbox even?).
if that doesn't work, it is still being discussed on msdn.
Thanks for the information, droid. Yeah, I think it is somewhat rediculous that XACT needs a completely separate program (XACT Auditioning Utility) to playback sound. I'm sure there's a good reason for it. As you mentioned, if it can run on the Xbox 360, then you might get a better idea of what it sounds like on the sound systems that you're actually running on.
Still, though, it seems like overkill to me.
But you're right. To fix this problem, just start up the XACT Auditioning Utility that is located in the same folder that XACT itself was located in.
I can't seem to open XACT.
There is a way of installing XACT without having Visual Studio (which is my case); maybe you ran into the same problem, and since this seems to be of general interest, I am putting this here.
The following page explains how to proceed; I have just been through it, and had no trouble. It was short and XACT now runs on my machine!

PS: by the way, I used the Refresh version of XNA Game Studio 4.0 instead of the ‘regular’ one (given by the aforesaid page), because it does apparently fix some bugs, but everything went identical.
