The IRC Channel (chat room) that we'll be able to use for this can be found here: http://rbwhitaker.wikidot.com/competition-chat

If you want to connect with a different IRC client (and trust me, there are hundreds of them, many of which have better features than the one at the end of the link above) you can connect directly to it.

Host: irc.freenode.net
Channel: #rbwhitaker-game-dev

You do not need to register/reserve a user name. You can use a different one every time, or use the same one and hope that nobody else comes along and takes it.

However, if you want to get a user name that is reserved for you, you can do that as well. The process is a little different than what you might be used to if you've never used IRC before. It basically involves talking to a service called NickServ directly in the chat room, but you'll be sending private messages to it, so we won't see it. Just thought I'd pop a quick note about registering a user name. While RB says you'll be 'talking' to the NickServ service, it's really only issuing one command with your requested user name and the password you want to use. And it looks like this:

"/msg NickServ REGISTER password moc.elpmaxe|liameruoy#moc.elpmaxe|liameruoy"

That's it. Now there are two kickers when going this route, 1. You have to provide an email, and 2. You'll have to sign in to use your registered nickname. Signing in looks like this:

"/msg NickServ IDENTIFY password"

So there's the extra step each time when signing in, but it's not too bad for securing your own personal name.

This is true. It's not a whole lot of work to have your name reserved. The other part of this is if you're using a standalone client like HexChat you can put that information in and it will authenticate you automatically, so you don't have to do manually do this every time.
