We’re building the game below, and we’re looking for more team members. Also note that we will be updating the original posts as time passes.
The Game Concept
The game we want to make is a multi-player collaborative, puzzle/maze game with an as-yet-to-be-determined awesome theme and visual style.
You work with a small group of friends (possibly including AI), explore the world, find and solve puzzles (of the logic, word, mechanical, and other varieties), avoid or escape traps, to ultimately achieve some larger goal or mission, while fighting off monsters, creatures, robots, etc.
Game rounds are usually relatively short—anywhere from 5 minutes up to maybe an hour.
Some possible themes that we’ve talked are an adventure/Indiana Jones style theme, a Mission/Space theme, a pirate/buried treasure/sunken ship theme, etc. We are mostly focused on building an engine that supports a variety of these types of themes, but will probably pick a single one to focus on during the 6 weeks. (We have some “walkthroughs” of a couple of these themes in our design document that we can share later.)
The goal in creating this game is to create a “mood” for the players, in which they will want to communicate both fast and efficiently to solve puzzles and other problems they encounter. Giving a team an array of choices so they have to work together and agree on where to go/what to do versus forcing them together on a single difficult problem.
We have been talking about 3D (in a XCOM sort of way) with a third person perspective. Top-down 2D is also a possibility.
The Team
This is an open call for people to join us in making this game!
The current team is RB and Swatacular, but we want YOU!
Ideal Teammate:
Someone who shares the dream for what this game can be, and is able to make that dream come true for all of us.
We’re already starting to make important decisions, so the sooner you let us know you might be interested, the better.
If you’re on the fence and want to know more, or if you have specific questions about the game, then ask and let us know. We’ve got more information where this came from.
We’re hoping to sell this game, either at the end of the competition or some time after. We plan on dividing up the profits equally among all team members.
We will sort out decisions by team consensus. There’s not going to be a single person who calls all the shots. We don’t yet know the details of how this will work, but it would presumably be majority rules for most things.
In the event that we find ourselves in an intractable disagreement (the team isn’t functioning anymore) then we plan to include a “shotgun clause” that would allow us to split up the team and stay friends.
Please note that If you don’t want to commit to the game fully, but are willing to spare some time in it, we are always willing to accept “free” resources, in which you declare that you are giving us anything without any expectation of payment or credit (unless otherwise stated).
Technologies
All of the technology that we have here is tentative at this point, and so if you are planning on joining us, you can help us decide.
We’re planning on using MonoGame (http://www.monogame.net/) and Mercurial (https://www.mercurial-scm.org/) for version control, and host it on BitBucket (https://bitbucket.org/).
We might use Taiga (https://taiga.io/) for a project managment tool. Like other project management tools, it will allow us to clearly define things that need to be done, and when they should be done.
We will probably also use Slack (https://slack.com/) for a collaboration tool. This will help us communicate as a team when we’re not working at the same time or in the same place.
(There is a neat little video on the website, go check it out!)
