I'm new to programming, but I thought this sounded like fun. I'm pretty late to the competition, so my game will probably be fairly bad at the end, but making a post will probably inspire me to keep working on it. It's going to be a standard, fairly boring platformer, but hopefully I'll be able to make it somewhat interesting. Here's what I've gotten done today: imgur. com/zfp6yPi (remove space for link) :)
Looking good, Hudson P! I'm glad to see the little mega man guy in there, I thought about doing a mega clone at some point, just haven't gotten to it yet. Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to trying it out!

OK, so I've worked on it a little in the past few days. I added some generic, weird-looking slime monsters that don't actually have any AI, but they are able to die when the player shoots fireballs at them. The health bar is functional, and the player takes damage when standing on spikes, and regains it when standing near a campfire. An NPC says hi when you approach him, and there is a system to move between rooms when you walk off-screen. That's pretty much all I've added. By the end of the competition, I mainly hope to have more interesting AI for the monsters, and perhaps a few more features. Here are some screenshots: http://imgur.com/vfNHZiR,1Bqmh13#0
Forgive my crummy art. :)
Wow - for being new to programming, it sounds like you're making some great progress, so keep it up! And don't worry about the artwork, because none of us here are artists. (At least, as far as I'm aware, haha!)
