We've only just barely finished up competition #3, but it's maybe time to start looking forward to Competition #4 to figure out when it should happen. We've done these things roughly quarterly (every third month) up until now. That seems like a fairly reasonable schedule for most people, and would put Competition #4 in roughly February.

February is probably a relatively good time. The students who are around are not at the end of the semester, where there are killer finals and large projects to do, and there's not a whole lot else going on for most people. In the northern hemisphere, it's too cold to do anything fun outside still…

February may not be particularly great for me, personally (I'm already pretty packed, as far as scheduling goes, for the early part of 2015) so I may or may not be able to join if it happens then, but that shouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker for the rest of you. (And I might still find enough time to join anyway.)

Thoughts?

February sounds like a good time, especially since you thought of students who might participate in the competitions. Personally I like being outside when it's reasonably cold but that's just me. You've chosen a good time frame regardless. Hopefully you can participate if you're willing and able.

I'm interested. The time frame doesn't particularly matter to me. My work and life schedules stay steady all year round so I don't really have a 'best' time to provide as input.

I am also new to XNA, but I am so in(unless something really important comes up which prevents me, which I really hope doesn't happen because I really want to participate in this).

It seems the best time would be like what we did last time and the time before.. 1 month plus weekends.. so 31st of January (Saturday) and ending on the 2nd of March. (Monday)

I'm open to the idea of a February competition. That puts us on pace for 4 a year, which I think is a good target goal. The dates Swat listed would probably be the ones if we do it in February.

Alternatively, I might propose a March competition. That gives us a little more time to get things organized. February is already only a couple of weeks away…

In the end, I think I'll defer to you guys. Unfortunately, I don't think I can join this time around with a game. I've got big plans for additional books that I want to get published, and I've got a long way to go. Perhaps I can join with a book instead! It's not much of a "game" but I think the competition format would still be useful to me.

Well as things stand right now a February competition is fine with me. Really just means that I will need to do some cramming between now and then. Just so that I can kinda feel like I am prepared for this a bit more.

Hey guys.. looks like most everyone was happy with 1.31 to 3.2… so unless there are any objections, I'm going to say thats a done deal. RB may or may not be able to join, and after this latest collaboration, we're only a few days out… I'm going to set up the official sign up and everyone who's still in, get over there!

I would have preferred March, because I know there's no way I can do Feb. I was actually going to get on here tonight and propose changing the dates until then, but PiscesMike beat me to it… :D I would say, "let's delay it to let people have more of a chance to think about it and sign up," but there's already quite a few people on board with February, so I'm OK going for it.

I won't be able to join this time around, but there was probably a 50/50 chance I wouldn't be able to do it in March anyway. Since we've already got a theme and quite a few people signed up, I'd say there's no reason to change the dates now.

I might suggest a minor tweak to the time frame. We've usually started on a Friday, and ended on a Sunday night. Basically shifting the current schedule by a day. People usually have more time/interest to dive into a game on Friday night than on Monday (unless that's a holiday or something).

We're already short on time, and that would make us lose another day, which could be a deal breaker. But maybe it's still worth it, to match all of the other competitions.

(I know for me, once that last weekend passes, I'm probably done anyway. Then again, I don't think I'll be joining this one, so I'll defer to you guys.)

I just stumbled on these competitions and think they are a great idea. Not sure I will be ready to commit to this one on 1 Feb though. About when would the next one kick off?

We've been doing them about every three months, so while nothing is official, the next one might be the month of May.

Brett208, you've maybe seen this by now, but we're well into the planning stages of Competition #5. We've chosen to start on May 22nd. I was just digging through some old email and saw this question again. I thought it might be helpful to post an updated answer.
