Marcus, I just spent about 25 minutes playing your game. It turned out great! Very well done! I love the little story that goes with it. It took me a while to figure out how the different enemy types operated, but I love the variety. I also really like how you have multiple weapons to choose from. This game is actually really cool. You should be proud of what you've accomplished. Keep it up! We've got round 2 starting in a few days!

That is so true Marcus, I programmed a good 20 hours during the first competition, and Ive probably spent 2 hours since….
That being said I changed my personal goal thread to be realistic :P

Okay, I got some big news … Earthling Defenders is 100% done! Download link time:

https://bitbucket.org/TheMazinTar/earthling-defenders/downloads#download-367702

Version 2.0 still has Endless mode, which is essentially version 1.0, but the scripted formations the enemies spawn in are much less frequent. I finally decided yesterday to find a new way to get a random number, because the old way was just not working, and I'm so glad that I did because the new way works great! So, more often than not, you'll get a completely random enemy formation.

Aside from that, the entire Story mode is in 2.0, which you guys have never seen before. There's 5 levels, each introducing a new enemy, and a little bit of a story at the beginning of each level, and, of course, at the end of the game. ;]

There's also a menu which is pretty self-explanatory, but there are a couple of things that I want to make clear. Remember during the first week of this competition, which ended close to two months ago, when I was messing around with backgrounds? Well, I never tore out the code for that, I just wasn't using it, so it was always extremely easy for me to tell it to start running again if I wanted to, which I did, because I'd like to have a background. However, I still have my original issue with it - it's distracting, and, a new problem, it's very difficult to see some of the enemy's shots or shields when they're up. Due to its less than greatness, but me wanting something there, I figured that today I'd add a toggle button for ya'all, which is indicated on the menu. What I wanted to clarify is that you can toggle it in-game, too - you don't have to keep jumping back to the menu. Same goes for the music - it can be toggled in-game.

Ah, yes, here's something kind of important - when you're in-game, pressing the escape key will bring you back to the menu, and pressing q while on the menu will quit the game.

Anyways, this has been a ton of fun to make - thanks to everyone for the feedback and for being in the chatroom available for a discussion. Can't wait for the next competition!

It is funny how, just as soon as the competition ends, it becomes so much harder to find the time to program again! Maybe the next competition should be two months long. That way it can either be at a more relaxed development speed, or a more ambitious project.

I haven't spent as much time working on my game since the competition ended, though I've been planning to, and still plan to before the next competition. It's mostly just laziness, though perhaps that's not quite fair to say since I've got a job that takes more than full time (more than 40 hours) and I'm going to be just barely short of my goal of running 100 miles in a month. (92 is still really great!) I'm sitting down today to put in some hours on the site (answering emails and stuff) but I'm hoping that will include some more work on my Space Invaders clone…

Hey Marcus! Nice work!
I'm not sure about what others are doing currently, but I'm sort-of on a hiatus for a little bit, as I finish up reading RB's book and work with him a little on the outlines for the next competition. Like you said, I planned on doing a lot more on the last code, but have been distracted with stuff around the house. With the weather getting warmer I've had no choice but to do some yard upkeep. Once I do get some free time, I'm going to be tweaking the code from my last three competition entries, and then sit down to workout three more games I want to get complete and to market before the end of the year.
Thanks for the update and look forward to talking to you later!

I meant to do a lot of programming during this past week, but, heh heh, that didn't happen so much. I did, however, program for an hour and a half this afternoon, and, hurray, I made a new enemy!

This one is an interesting mix of the first two enemies. It has a period of invulnerability, like the bombing one, but will shoot once after that period ends, more like the standard one. I haven't really done anything else, except for some basic tweaks and finishing up the other enemy (including getting it to regenerate shield, similar to how the player does), but I'll try to get some more work on it over the weekend.
Is anyone else out there still working? Just curious, haha!

Hey guys, I've got an update for ya! I want to keep this pretty short, so I'm just going to make a quick list and attach a screenshot.

- The basics of a story mode (continuing through stages and levels, as well as story screens in between)
- A new enemy (not quite done, but mostly)
- A few tweaks (nothing in particular)
Here's a screenshot of the new enemy:

I'll try to keep putting out updates, but I want to get Earthling Defenders finished more, so, even if I don't put out an update, know that I'm still working!

Here's mine: https://bitbucket.org/rbwhitaker/space-invaders-2/downloads

I'll be doing some more work on mine. This is the version that I started on yesterday, the last day of the competition. I had to abandon my other game because of time constraints; I felt like it was more important to end up with a functioning game where people could explore the code than it was to push forward on the other game I had already started, and I knew it would be easier to create a clone than it would be to create a game of my own from scratch in such a short time period.

I want to add in a few other features like a menu, high scores, and credits. After all, GUIs is one of the big things people ask me for help on. This way I'll at least have something to point them to.

But I'm pretty happy with what I ended up with after just one day!

Greetings all! This thread is for posting whatever work you've completed by the end date for the competition. It doesn't mean your game has to be complete, but more of a record of where we're at at the end. I think a fair number of us could say that our games still need additions or tweaking. Personally there was a lot more I wanted to add, but between stuff I've got going on at home and other obligations, I just didn't have enough time to fit it all in. Still, the basics on my game were worked out, and I'm happy with where it's at even if the leveling system didn't get put in and there's really only one weapon. (You do get to choose between a purple blaster or green blaster by pressing up and down)

Anyways, rather than rambling on about what was good and bad with this project (I'll make another post for that later), I'm going to throw up a link and let you see. I did track my work time on this project, which came out to be 39.94 hours, plus or minus a little bit for accounting errors. This time was split pretty evenly between actual coding, and looking for graphics/music/sound effect resources.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5moEgyck5X5cDNKbUlrWE50Y3M/edit?usp=sharing
